Helen Zheng Altenbach
Born in Shenyang, China to a family of seven professional cellists on her paternal side, cellist Helen Zheng Altenbach studied in Russia as a child and moved to New York with her family at the age of 14. After graduating from the Juilliard School Pre-College division, she studied with Ron Leonard at the University of Southern California. In 2014 Helen was awarded the Global Music Awards Silver Medal for her album “Grieg and Prokofiev” released by Albany Records. She is also a recipient of the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society Young Artists Award, the ASCAP Foundation Ira Gershwin Award, and a winner of the Juilliard Concerto Competition. Helen won first prize in both solo and chamber music categories for the Great Neck Young Artists Competition and second prize at Corpus Christi Young Artists Competition. She was Principal Cello of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra between 2009-2012, and is currently a member of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Helen lives in Los Angeles with her Swiss-born husband and shelter-rescued cats.
